Structural Solution
New build dining hall and accommodation block to replace existing on the site of St Albans High School for Girls.
Significant refurbishment works were carried out to the existing sixth form building, and main school building to improve the flexibility of the work spaces, with new 10m span box frames to open up the ground floor, supporting two floors of concrete structure above.
The new dining hall building has been designed using a steel frame supporting 15m clear spanning hollow-core floors, with up to two levels of accommodation over. Lightweight framing to the upper levels is supported onto steel transfer beams, set independent from the main concrete floor structure at first floor level. This has allowed flexibility in the sequencing of the works, with the entire first floor structure being installed within the space of <2 weeks.
